Long-distance trips

Here are some recommendations for destinations outside of Uruguay, but still only a few hours away from our capital:

Iguazu Falls

Located on the Iguazu River, at the convergence of the Misiones province of Argentina and the Brazilian state of Paraná, and containing nearly three hundred look out points including the famous Devil’s throat, this protected area has been chosen as one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

The area was the heart of one of the most important Jesuit concentrations of the Spanish Conquest and has a range of trails to enjoy different views of the falls. The proximity of the shock of the water against the rocks produces a faint but incessant rain and a constant deafening roar. In addition, we recommend a ride on the waterfall train in order to visit St. Martin Island, from where stunning views of gorges and waterfalls can be viewed.

It is possible to walk trails (mostly found in the Argentine territory), boat under the waterfalls and hike trails through the semi-tropical forest, which extend over 67,000 hectares and where it is possible to spot toucans, monkeys, coatis, solitary tinamous and dusky-legged guans.

Buenos Aires

The intense and seductive port city, which stretches from north to south along the River Plate, has a rich cultural identity in which European heritage is central. The Obelisk, Avenida 9 de Julio, the tango and antique shops are a few of its distinctive characteristics.

There are many important museums and art galleries in the city, which also has a thriving theatre movement. One of the finest opera houses in the world, the Colon Theatre, attracts some of the renowned artists from all over.

It also has landmark neighbourhoods like bohemian San Telmo, which combines Spanish colonial style buildings, typically Italian details and the elegance of French art nouveau, and La Boca with it’s artistic expression reflected in the vibrant colours of the tin houses.
