Population |
The population of Uruguay is of European origin, mainly Spanish and Italian, giving it an open door immigration policy. There is also a black minority that arrived from the African coasts in the epoch of Spanish hegemony. The indigenous population has disappeared from the national territory more than a century ago, which differentiates the Uruguayan population from that of most Latin American countries.
The population of Uruguay fluctuates around 3.241.003 inhabitants. Despite being a country of livestock farmers, 80 percent of the population lives in cities. 43% of the population lives in Montevideo.
The birth rate is the lowest in South America, while the life expectancy is high, reaching 72 years for men and 74 for women, indicating a satisfactory level of health and nutrition.
